2008 Magill Politician of the Year Awards

The 2008 Magill Politician of the Year Awards took place on Wednesday, April 30th in The Royal Irish Academy on Dawson Street. Politician of the Year was awarded to the newly elected Taoiseach, Brain Cowen, for his competent handling of matters throughout last year’s general election and for his work within the Department of Finance.

The title of Minister of the Year was awarded to Brian Lenihan and Bertie Ahern was awarded Survivor of the Year for his ability to remain in office throughout 2007. The Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Irish politics was given to PJ Mara, former Director of Elections and long-time advisor to Fianna Fáil.

The Magill Politician of the Year Awards were established in 2005 to recognise those who serve the country across the political spectrum. They also note some of the more unusual political highlights of the previous twelve months, including who wore the season’s fashions the best and the loudest heckler in cabinet.
